The most valuable asset of HBO Max is its extensive and diverse TV and movie library, which includes programming for both adults and children. When it first launched, it offered 10,000 hours of streaming content, including everything on HBO as well as a selection of high-profile TV shows like Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Rick and Morty, and South Park.
It has since grown to over 13,000 hours of content, which includes documentaries, reality shows, film franchises, and animation. 4K HDR titles are extremely hard to come by.
HBO Max has an undeniably large catalog, and the streaming service, like competitors Netflix and Hulu, is constantly adding new and historic movies and shows to its library each month. However, its 4K title library is limited and difficult to locate. Unlike Netflix, where you can search for "4K" to find all available content, this is not the case here.
Despite the fact that each item has a 4K stamp in its description, HBO Max's help page keeps a running list of every title that is available in 4K, HDR10, and Dolby Vision. The first new HBO show to be available in these formats is House of the Dragon, while Game of Thrones is now available in 4K. Dune, Kimi, The Suicide Squad, and The Matrix trilogy are also on the list. There are approximately 30 movies that stream in 4K, and you must have the ad-free HBO Max package and a suitable device to access them.
A visually appealing user interface
Scrolling through HBO Max is comparable to that of Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services. When you access your profile, Continue Watching and My List will be at the top of the screen. When you visit the website, you'll see a carousel of the most recent releases, followed by recommendation rows like Just Added, Trending Comedy, For You, Popular TV, or the aptly named Hilariously Chaotic.
The menu design is similar to that of many other streaming services. It has a dark purple and black theme that highlights the text and photos, and it shows fewer tiles at once with more pauses between them to give your eyes a rest. One disadvantage is that it can be difficult to determine what text is highlighted in the menus so that you can make decisions at first.
In the center of the website, you'll notice a small hub where you can access movies and series from each of the service's properties: HBO, DC, Sesame Workshop, Turner Classic Movies, Studio Ghibli, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and Looney Tunes. It is similar to the center at the top of the Disney Plus page, but it contains fewer recognizable names than Disney's Star Wars and Marvel.
You'll also notice curated groups of movies based on a theme, such as rom-com classics and blockbuster franchises, scattered throughout your website. You can search by categories such as Series, Movies, Originals, Just Added, Last Chance, and Coming Soon, as well as genres such as Action, Comedy, Crime, and Documentaries, by clicking Browse in the upper left corner. You'll also find the small hubs in this panel.
In contrast to Netflix, you can quickly see what is coming and going on the site and adjust your viewing accordingly. Mobile downloads are also available, and the app format is essentially the same across TVs, phones, and tablets.
HBO Max allows you to search using acronyms (like "GOT" instead of "Game of Thrones" or "HP" instead of "Harry Potter"). On Apple TV, voice search worked well; when we said, "Watch Rick and Morty," HBO Max opened the series landing page, allowing us to choose an episode. When I said "Watch GOT" after finishing an episode of Game of Thrones, it immediately took me back to where we had left off. When I said "Watch Jaws," the Apple TV displayed a list of all available streaming services at the bottom of the screen.
When you select a show, you will be taken to its landing page, where you can view each episode in a neat format and add it to your list. When you start a show, the rating appears in the upper left corner.
In the summer of 2022, HBO Max will launch a new set of capabilities for mobile and desktop users. SharePlay enables iPad and iPhone users in the United States to watch content with friends and family via FaceTime. The shuffle button is now available for mobile phone users who want to watch random TV show episodes. On supported devices, you can also enable split-screen mode, and tablet users can easily switch between portrait and landscape orientations.
Despite the fact that there are no human recommendations, the algorithm is accurate.
One of HBO Max's claims was that it would feature curated content from celebrities rather than simply using a recommendation engine to find new content for customers. This feature, however, is still unavailable. It does filter information in useful ways, such as emphasizing Friends episodes that follow Ross and Rachel's romance so you don't have to hunt them down. Otherwise, recommendations are made based on your viewing habits and preferences.
Should you pay for HBO Max?
If you already have an HBO subscription, it's a no-brainer to use the HBO Max app: For the same monthly fee, there's a lot more content.
HBO Max is more expensive for new customers, but if you have $10 or $15 a month to burn and want to binge Studio Ghibli movies, Game of Thrones episodes, Warner Bros. movies, or Max Originals, you'll have plenty of options. And, if you don't mind a few ads - or the loss of 4K and offline downloads - the $10-per-month HBO Max with Ads plan might be a good fit for you.
