VirtualShield VPN performs as advertised, allowing you to connect to a server in a different location in order to protect your online privacy and access content that would otherwise be inaccessible. Additionally, it provides excellent download speeds, but it is unclear how many servers are available. Unfortunately, the provider does not offer refunds or router installation support, but its generous 30-day free trial and additional add-ons are undeniably advantageous.

Customers who are not businesses can choose between two service packages. The first is called Protect Myself and is designed for a single user to run VPN connections simultaneously on up to three devices. The other is Protect My Family, which is designed for households with two to five members. It can be utilized on up to 15 devices simultaneously.
If you choose the Protect Myself package, the two-year subscription, which costs the equivalent of $4.99 per month, is discounted the most. The cheapest two-year family subscription costs $14.99 per month.
During the purchasing process, you can select additional options such as Unrestricted Streaming, Protection Plus, Premium Phone Support, Monthly Maintenance, Webcam Privacy Basic, and Webcam Privacy Plus, which all increase the final price.
The provider's generous 30-day free trial allows you to test the service for a full month before deciding whether to continue. You must sign up and provide your credit card information, but the first month is free. Remember to cancel your subscription before the deadline, as there are no refunds.
PayPal and credit/debit cards are acceptable forms of payment.
Security and encryption
VirtualShield uses the L2TP and OpenVPN UDP/TCP connection protocols to protect your privacy, but makes no mention of encryption. We were unable to locate information about the algorithm used for encryption, and customer service ignored our email.
Users of Windows will have access to a kill switch that terminates internet access if the VPN connection is lost, but it must be manually activated. App Guard, an extension of a kill switch that allows VirtualShield to terminate an application automatically if the VPN connection is interrupted, is one of the app's additional useful features.
Although this provider is based in the United States, it appears to permit torrenting.
According to the company's Privacy Policy(opens in a new tab), your activities are safe from prying eyes because the company does not "monitor user activity in any way, nor do we retain logs of our 'VPN' service." It specifies that this includes "which websites you visited, what content you downloaded, which apps you used, which software you utilized, etc., while connected to any of our VPN servers."
The only exception is the temporary recording of your successful connection to one of the provider's servers "for the sole purpose of limiting the number of simultaneous connections per account." This information, which consists of your account ID and a randomly generated connection ID, is removed from VirtualShield's database when you disconnect.
This information does not include "the time at which you connected, the server to which you connected, the location from which you connected, the device from which you connected, or any other information that could be used to trace any activity back to a single user," we are informed. The Policy adds that this means the vendor cannot ever associate a specific VPN user with a specific activity.
This all sounds very reassuring, but we would prefer independent auditing to provide stronger evidence.
Competence and expertise
The VirtualShield VPN Windows application was very user-friendly, and we were notified whenever a VPN connection was established. During our speed tests, we discovered that this VPN's servers were all owned by the same company, which promises greater control over how your data is used. However, some of the servers were unable to connect.
Our tests, conducted over a 54.13Mbps connection and from a location in south-eastern Europe, yielded excellent results. For example, Switzerland boasted a very fast 33.47Mbps, while the United Kingdom only managed 12.50Mbps.
Surprisingly, the US East Coast server lagged behind the UK by only a small margin, delivering a very usable 11.24Mbps. In the end, a server in Singapore provided us with 8.37Mbps, which is still a respectable speed for a location so distant from our own.
