Stop! These Bad Habits Cause Liver Damage

Damage to the heart is something that cannot be taken lightly. Research data shows that the death rate from liver disease has been increasing.

Some of the liver diseases that are quite contributing to the high incidence rate can come from bad habits.

Generally, liver damage that occurs as a result of these bad habits goes unnoticed for years.

What are the causes of liver damage? Here are habits that can damage the heart:

1. Consuming Too Much Fatty Food

This condition is known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or fatty liver caused by other than alcohol.

NAFLD occurs when a person has an excessive intake of fatty foods.

Therefore, NAFLD is familiar to someone who is overweight, obese, diabetic, and has high cholesterol or triglyceride values.

Without an improvement in food intake and lifestyle, NAFLD will further interfere with the work of the liver until severe liver damage occurs.

2. Drinking Alcohol Chronically

Chronic alcoholism is a fairly frequent cause of liver damage, especially in Western countries.

Although no specific amount of alcohol can be determined, generally high daily consumption for 10 to 20 years will lead to liver damage.

Chronic alcohol consumption can also trigger fatty liver to cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Excess alcohol consumption will immediately cause fatty deposits in the liver, even as quickly as two days after drinking alcohol (it can only return to normal in two weeks after stopping drinking alcohol).

3. Using Drugs Carelessly

One of the habits that damage the liver is the indiscriminate use of drugs.

Some types of drugs rely on the liver as the main metabolizing organ. It can be said that the liver will 'work harder' when certain types of these drugs are being taken.

Generally the liver can still compensate for this task without being damaged, if the drug is used according to applicable regulations (according to a doctor's prescription).

However, the use of drugs with excessive and prolonged doses indiscriminately can increase the risk of liver damage.

Likewise with the habit of taking drugs whose safety status is not clear. For example, drugs that are not registered with BPOM.

For that, make sure the medicine you take is only under a prescription and doctor's supervision.

4. Using used syringes

For users of narcotics and injection-type illicit drugs, the use of injecting equipment in groups is common and sometimes unavoidable.

In fact, in addition to the risk of contracting HIV, this habit also puts a person at risk of contracting hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses. These two types of viruses are mainly transmitted by blood.

In addition to narcotics users, the use of used needles that are not properly sterilized—for example in tattooing—also carries the same risk.

5. Unsafe Free Sex

Be careful, this habit can be the cause of liver damage! Why is that?

Frequently changing partners by not using protection, such as condoms, increases the risk of hepatitis B virus infection.

This virus can cause acute or chronic liver inflammation, which in turn can lead to liver cirrhosis or liver cancer.

6. Smoking, Both Passive and Active

Maybe you already know that smoking is one of the habits that damage the liver.

Smoking can accelerate the development of liver diseases, including hepatitis B and C, nonalcoholic liver disease, and primary biliary cirrhosis.

Therefore, start to stop smoking so that your liver health is always maintained.

7. Less Drinking Water

Dehydration can have a direct effect on the liver's ability to detoxify toxins in the body.

So in addition to damage to the liver, damage can also occur in other body organs that require water.

8. Eat and Drink High in Sugar

Be wary if you consume too much sugar in your diet, especially the fructose type. Because this is a habit that also damages the heart.

If you consume too much fructose over time, the liver can become overwhelmed and suffer irreparable damage.

Are there any of the habits above that you routinely do? If there is, stop the habit now.

Do not let these habits be carried out in a protracted manner, to cause severe liver disorders.
